    stylish decor
    great breakfast
    remote location

The beautifully restored machiya exudes charm, with stylish decor that bridges the traditional and the eclectic, coupled with modern and spacious bathrooms. Breakfast options—both Japanese and Western—are outstanding, elevating the morning experience.

The location is a bit remote from main attractions like Nijo Castle, which may require a decent trek to reach, especially if you want to explore more. The Standard Twin Room, while inviting, could use better air conditioning for the warmer nights.

    My rollercoaster experience!

The hosts’ genuine hospitality standout—Tome’s incredible warmth and advice transformed our stay. Spacious, comfortable rooms, coupled with delicious breakfast served artfully, felt like a heartfelt embrace each morning!

The location, while serene, presented challenges with public transport—navigating was time-consuming at times. The room, although cozy, lacked air conditioning effectiveness, making warm nights a bit uncomfortable, alas.

    beautiful garden view
    short stay

The personal attentiveness from Tome made our stay feel

like a family visit rather than just a hotel experience. The beautiful garden view from our room added to the tranquility, and the tea service was a lovely touch. No complaints overall, just wished we had booked a longer stay!

    longer stay

My recent stay at ryokan mugen surpassed my earlier visits to kyoto. The cozy, artistic decor and really good hospitality. I'm grateful for the thoughtful local tips and delicious traditional breakfast that added so much to the experience.

i wished the stay could have been longer.

    public transport challenge

My stay at Ryokan Mugen was delightful! Tome-san and Kazu-san were incredibly warm and friendly, genuinely making me feel at home. The breakfast was a highlight, with beautifully plated traditional dishes that were both delicious and visually appealing.

The location is a bit remote.

pleasant stay but could improve on some details

The peaceful ambiance of the ryokan created a perfect escape from the city rush. I enjoyed the beautiful garden view from my room, which significantly added to my relaxation. The hospitable owners provided tailored recommendations for local highlights, showcasing their deep knowledge and genuine care for guests.

The location, while serene, requires a considerable trek to reach main attractions.

    helpful hosts
    local dinner map
    remote location

Had a fantastic stay with friends! The hosts went above and beyond, helping us with restaurant bookings and bus routes. We loved the local dinner map shared by Tome and the private bar, nice after a busy day in the city. We biked around and visited the Imperial Palace and Gion. Totally worth it!

Just a heads up, the ryokan is a bit off the main tourist track, so it took some time navigating public transport.

    stunning design
    personalized adventure
    remote location
    limited breakfast variety
    ineffective air conditioning

The experience includes a stunning design throughout the property, featuring handpicked vintage Yukata and antique dishes that enhanced the atmosphere. The unique hidden bar created an intimate and memorable setting, while the recommendations for local dining and attractions turned our casual exploration into a personalized adventure. However, the location felt somewhat remote, requiring extra effort for public transport, and the breakfast options, although delicious, could have benefited from more variety. Air conditioning was also less effective than expected, leaving us a bit too warm at times.
